Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles – Video games

This text is intended to present the richness of Ninja Turtles video games – all those that use “some screen”. To approximate only, not to go into detail, our aim is not to describe every possible game that has come out, but only to outline the topic.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles as such debuted in the comic book form in 1984, not much later, in 1987 they hit TV screens in the form of the first animated series . For the debut in the form of a video game (about other games, including the paper RPG released in 1985, we write in this note) we had to wait another two years, until 1989, when a game titled “ Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” was released in North America and Japan. The game was intended for NES (Nintendo Entertainment System), after a year, versions for personal computers were also released, such as Amiga, Atari ST, Commodore 64, ZX Spectrum, etc.

The purpose of this post is not to accurately describe each game, but for the first one we make a tiny exception and include a microgallery:

It will not be an exaggeration to say that after the premiere of the first game, the bag with them was simply ripped open. Another, in the form of a slot machine, also came out in 1989 (a year later it was transferred to NES as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Arcade Game), also the first of the “hand held” (also named simply Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) came out this year, the second, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: Splinter Speaks right in 1990.

In the same 1990, the first game directly designed for computers was released, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: World Tour (it is a coloring game), turtles also made their debut on Game Boy, in the game Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Fall of the Foot Clan. There was also a second arcade machine, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Pizza Drop.

The following years saw new games, both arcade machines and hand helds, new games for the previously mentioned systems, as well as for new ones, such as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Hyperstone Heist for Sega Genesis, released in 1992. With time, however, their number began to fall, and finally stopped.

The brand’s revival in the field of electronic entertainment took place in 2003, with the premiere of the second animated series. That year, two different games were released with the common, standard title Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, one for Game Boy Advance, the other for PCs and the main consoles of this period, i.e. GameCube, Xbox and PlayStation 2. In the year 2004 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2: Battle Nexus was released on the same set of machines, released in 2005 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 3: Mutant Nightmare skipped the PC, it was intended for for GameCube, Xbox, PlayStation 2 and new console, Nintendo DS.

The following years are a similar story, for a few years there were some new items, including the first game for mobile phones (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Fast Forward: Ninja Training NYC, 2005) or the first games in the system “Plug and play” which can be described as “consoles connected to the TV, with one game permanently saved”. Such Plug and Play titles are TMNT: Battle for the City or Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutants and Monsters Mayhem. There were also games based on animated movie from 2007, games referring to subsequent seasons of the series from 2003, etc., but in 2009 it all again stoped.

Another revival came in 2013, a year after the premiere of the third animated series. The passing years have again brought a small revolution on the market of “gaming systems”, which can be seen from the fact that two of the games released in 2013, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Rooftop Run and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Rumble was intended for iOS and Androd. Of course, games have also started to appear on other systems, such as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows for Xbox Live Arcade and PCs (and in 2014 also available as part of PlayStation Network) or another game with the title Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles released for Xbox 360, Wii, Nintendo 3DS.

The games did not manage to get out of breath this time, 2014 is another strengthening of the topic, for the obvious reason, the premiere of the new cinema movie. For example, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Training Lair has been released for the Xbox 360 Kinect, another game with a title Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, for Nintendo 3DS, Android, IOS. The film did not dominate the subject, however, in the year of its premiere, the game Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Danger of the Ooze was also released for Nintendo 3DS, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

Until today, various new games are slowly coming out, for example, for Android and iOS Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Legends (what is worth mentioning here, is fact that in that game you can find turtle characters from different periods, i.e. comic versions, and from the 1987 series as well as from the 2014 movie), Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutants in Manhattan for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, Xbox 360 and PCs, or released in 2017, after a long hiatus in this segment, the arcade machine – whose name is again the usual and simple Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. For 2021, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge was also announced, interestingly, it is based on the first animated series.

A separate category that we must mention are also various free games that Nickelodeon publishes on theis website – at this address you can find one of them: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Shadow Heroes, while looking around on the page itself you will find many others. Very varied, both in terms of gameplay and characters (versions/incarnations) of Turtles. Below is a mini-gallery of a few sample games.

A completely separate field are non-TMNT games in which they appear (or only one of them), these will be described in separate, dedicated to them note(s). Here we only mentions titles such as Smite, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 5 and Injustice 2. The same applies to games with Easter Eggs related to TMNT, such as Tibia, World of Warcraft, Streets of Rage 4 or Borderlands 2.

More information about the games can be found, for example, in turtlepedia.fandom.com, this this and this articles, you can also take a look at Wikipedia.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles – RPG, Board, Card games

This text is intended to present the richnes of Ninja Turtles tabletop games, i.e. paper RPGs, board games. card games, etc. Only shortly present them, our goal is not to describe every possible game that came out, but to outline the topic.

While the first video game appeared only in 1989, five years after premiere of first comics, and 2 years after first animated tv series, other kinds of games did not wait that long. The first Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles & Other Strangeness paper based RPG manual appeared as early as 1985, published by Palladium Books. It was a serious and more mature system, in the tone of the first comics, not the later animated series. As part of the “main world”, the last expansion (Turtles Go Hollywood) was released in 1990, there was also a separate series with an action set in the future, After the Bomb, although further expansion from this series were definitely less turtle, connection with the TMNT after some time became purely symbolic. Palladium had plans to release a new RPG in 1997, unsatisfactory pre-sales and too little interest, however, made them abandon the idea, thus they lost the license in 2000. No one else has tried to release classic RPGs after them.

Moving on to board games, there is also an amazing richnes here. They can be divided into two types, the first are all original games that do not adapt the proven formats. In a nutshell: a huge amount of games came out. From very simple board games, that the only interesting thing abous is fact, that they are TMNT-licensed, to those that can defend themselves by being solid products, and embedding them in a turtleverse is just a nice addition.

Interesting and relatively recent examples of such games is released by IDW Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shadows of the Past and its reboot/sequel, a whole series of main games and add-ons under the common name Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Adventures! Other interesting games include Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Subterranean Sewer Hockey released in 1991, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Foot Clan Street Fight Game from 2014, or Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Tower of Doom from 1990.

Of course, there were also various card games, such as Mutant Mayhem or Turtle Power, which were based on the series from 2012, and TCG based on the earlier series (in addition to the ones shown, the turtles had also a lot of various cards that were only collectable, without the aspect of playing them, so they do not fall under this text, we only mention them on the margin).

The second type are “licensed games”, ie combining some proven format with Ninja Turtles. Here, one should definitely mention, for example, Monopoly (which probably cooperated with every possible brand), which is distinguished by the fact that as many as four different editions were created! One is in the style of the first series, there are six painted figures as pawns, four turtles, Splinter and Casey Jones, there is also a tiny slice of pizza and a pizza box. The other two editions are based on the third series, from 2012. In one (metal, unpainted) figures are Kraang, Spike, a throwing star/shuriken, a piece of pizza, a container with mutagen and a Shredder helmet, in the other the figures are more typical, also metal and unpainted, but they show four turtles, Splinter and Shredder. All the rest of the game, the board, the cards’ appearance etc. are reworked and use the ninja turtles world.

There is also a turtle version of the “Guess Who?” Game. Another example of such a licensed game is Munchkin Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the name of which says it all. It is actually a less board game and more of a card game, and speaking of these, of course turtles have also been combined with games such as “Uno” or “regular” cards, which you can play any of the popular card games, from solitaire to poker.

There are also at least two turtle versions of the traditional Chinese game, version of Twister (called Pizza Spin), Memo and probably a lot of other things.

More information about some of the described games can be found, for example, on the website boardgamegeek.com or on turtlepedia.fandom.com.

– The blue tortoise shell is Mario kart race’s ultimate weapon. It magically finds the lead car in the race, and takes it out. Wha-ha-ha-ha!

S01E06 – Vegetable Fun Fest – A segment with a turtle and a snail riding on it appears.
S01E09 – S&M Present – A segment appears with all four Ninja Turtles that train/fight with one of the characters – which must recognize by voice which one to eliminate.

– Only one of these turtles is played by Corey Feldman. Trust your instincts. Corey Feldman.

– Turtle power, dude!

– Only one of these turtles is played by Forcory – for Fory Clel …- Clory Flu … Cloris Leachman.

S02E03 – Easter Basket – A turtle used as a bidet appears in the Flintstones segment. First, he mentions what (and implicitly, terrible) things he has witnessed, and when one of the characters goes into a murderous frenzy, he asks “the lord” not to stop that person before he kills him and, implicitly, ends his suffering.

Oh, man, the things I’ve witnessed …

Oh lord, please don’t stop him before he kills me.

S02E05 – Dragon Nuts – A segment with characters from The NeverEnding Story, including Morla.
S02E08 – Rodigitti – There’s an entire segment dedicated to TMNT who have become “old” instead of “teenage”. There is also an adequately reworked song from the cartoon, with pieces such as ‘heroes on wheelchairs’ or ‘Heroes in diapers’.

Senior Mutant Ninja Turtles. Heroes in a Wheelchair! (…)
Senior Mutant Ninja Turtles. Heroes wearing diapers! (…)
Senior Mutant Ninja Turtles. Heroes touching Nurses! (…)
Senior Mutant Ninja Turtles. Dealing with life’s changes!

– What are you doing ?! You just killed my turtle!
– Oh, my God! I’m so sorry! ?

S03E05 – Shoe – In one of the segments there is a typical western duel of the Tortoise and the Hare, which can be considered obvious reference. The Hare is of course faster and shoots first, hitting the turtle many times, but on his shell it does not make any impression. He slowly draws his weapon and defeats the opponent.
S03E10 – Moesha Poppins – Venus appears in one of the segments, the character of the turtle that joined the turtles in the series Ninja Turtles: The Next Mutation. She is described as the fifth member of the team with a very special accessory – the vagina. It is also explained that after she dropped out of the crew, she tried to take her own life in a way appropriate for discarded turtles – by flushing down the toilet.

– The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles briefly added a fifth member with a very special accessory … a vagina. But after getting dumped from the team, Venus chose to end her life the way all discarded turtles meet their maker. Seen it a million times … tried to flush herself down the toilet.

S04E12 – Maurice Was Caught – There is one short segment showing the turtles slowly approaching each other.
S04E15 – Due to Constraints of Time and Budget – Again reference to Mario Kart racing, on the dashboard you can see icons such as green and blue turtles, they are also part of the dialogue. It is mentioned that the green turtles are an endangered species.

– Are those green turtles?
– Whatever they are, they’re getting shot.
– Come on! Green turtles are endangered!

– Come on! Not that one!
– The blue turtle shell always seeks out …

S04E16 – The Ramblings of Maurice – One of the segments is devoted to the threat posed by plastic elements of six-packs and other such multi-packs and a reminder that just in case they should be “torn”. The whole thing is, of course, a mock warning, because it is shown how a fight breaks out in a turtle bar and the turtles are fighting and when such foil rubbish reaches them “from above”, one uses it to strangle the other.
S05E05 – Malcolm X: Fully Loaded – In one segment, on the audience, among others, ou can spot the Shredder.

– Hey, look, a turtle!

S06E10 – Collateral Damage in Gang Turf War – A TMNT segment appears, one of them shows its breakdance movements twirling on the shell, but can’t get up by itself. Which ends tragically for him. There is also a segment in this episode which shows Bowser from the Mario universe for a second.
S06E12 – Butchered in Burbank – There is a reference to TMNT in the form of a street sharks cartoon advertisement, not being a TMNT rip-off at all.

– The street sharks “!
– It’s in-your-face, half-man, half-shark action that’s …
– Totally different from the ninja turtles!

– Plus, you won’t hear any hackneyed turtle puns on this show! Plus shell of a fun, hehe.

– It’s one shell of a good time – oh, wait.

S08E04 – Cheese Puff Mountain – Turtle appears in a parody segment of Paw Patrol. In addition, in the segment where animaniacs present Kamasutra positions, “Snapping Turtle” is listed.
S08E11 – Fridge Smell – There is a segment where Splinter “teaches” turtles about sexual matters. Which ends up in creating a turtle-friendly sex doll version of April.
S08E15 – Hopefully Salt – A segment from TMNT showing their brutality in action, title itself is “Pizza Brutality”, a reference to “Police Brutality”.
S08E17 – Secret of the Flushed Footlong – Krang is shown in one of the segments, in the restaurant.

In the second, a parody of the “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood” program, in which there is a robotic version of the title character, there is a turtle in a package, not visible to us. Unfortunately, he ends up poorly, and Robo-Rogers kills him.

– Mr. McFeely, I was not expecting a package.
– It’s a special surprise. It likes to walk on the ground and swim in the water.
– It is a turtle.
– Uh yes, it certainly was.
– Thank you for the turtle box
