Short films – Flintstones

Anyone who had any contact with the Flintstones universe may have noticed that the technology is very similar to modern technology, but presented in an original way – the shower is an elephant using its trunk, the gramophone uses a bird and its beak instead of a needle, etc. Turtles are also a very popular theme, most often shown as protective helmets in the quarries where Fred and Barney works, but they also have many other uses, both as shells and whole live turtles. Below are short films in which we noticed some turtle elements:

The Flintstones: Fred’s Final Fling (Year: 1980)
The turtle appears here as a real animal, used as a violin, in the same scene turtles are used as rattles. Turtle shell is also used as an unspecified thing on the tables in the restaurant, later you can also see two frying pans that seem to be made of turtle shells.

The Flintstones’ New Neighbors (Year: 1980)
The turtle shell can only be seen as a protective helmet worn by Fred.

The Flintstones: Jogging Fever (Year: 1981)
Turtle shells appear primarily as protective helmets in many scenes. In addition, however, in one scene, running Fred passes a real, live turtle.

Turtle elements (Gyullas Turtle) appear in the third and fifth mini-episodes.

Popeye’s Premiere (Rok: 1949)
Most of the turtle scenes shown here are from Aladdin and His Wonderful Lamp, showed in the cinema. With a slight change, in the turtle fragment, Popeye breaks the rules and, and as a spectator he gives himself-on-screen spinach.

Short films – Various Tortoise and the Hare

This note collects various short versions of The Tortoise and the Hare – except for those with named, popular turtles: Cecil and Toby who got their own notes.

The Tortoise Wins Again (Year: 1946)
Animation from the Terrytoon series. The Tortoise’s children read a story about the tortoise and the hare and show it to the hare children as well. The latter decides to challenge the turtle to a race, in this case, it is to be a skating race. Thanks to the support of his children (who cheat), the turtle, as the title suggests, wins the race.

Hare and the Tortoise (Year: 1947)
Typical Tortoise and the Hare. This film, created by “The Encyclopaedia Britannica Films”, is distinguished by its form – because videos with real, live animals were used, for which only the appropriate narrative was prepared.

A Hare-Breadth Finish (Year: 1957)
Animation from the Terrytoon series. It tells about a hare who has already lost to a turtle and is ridiculed for it, etc. So he trains intensively to win this time – which he fails, however, at the very finishing line he is stopped by a policeman (who turns out to be turtles in disguise).

The Hare and the Tortoise (Year: 1979)
Standard tortoise and hare story, without any deviation from the standard schema.

The Tortoise – The Hare (Year: 2002)
A standard story about a tortoise and a hare, distinguished from all above by the fact that its creator, Ray Harryhausen, started its production in 1952, and ended it (with an obvious long break) and published it 50 years later.

Oxbridge Baby: Fairy Tales – The Tortoise and the Hare (Year: 2008)
A painfully classic story of a turtle and a hare, without any quirks.

Granny Lane (Year: 2012)
In this story, the tortoise and the hare (visible at one point on the billboard) are treated more metaphorically, the tortoise is an old lady in a slow-moving car, while the hare is represented by youngsters in a fancy sport car. Needless to say, who ultimately prevails and reaches the goal.

The turtle appears here in several scenes: as a snoring recruit, as a member of the orchestra, and in an “out of the shell” version.

Juke Box Jamboree (Year: 1942)

Short films – Noveltoons

Noveltoons is the name of a short animation series produced for Paramount Pictures, from 1943 to 1967. Here we look in which of them you can find turtles.

The Old Shell Game (Year: 1948)
100% turtle short. We see the turtle playing checkers with itself (as in The Big Flame Up), then for most of the rest of the time the wolf trying to catch and eat this turtle. At the very end, the hare from the story about the tortoise and the hare appears, informing the tortoise that he is in the wrong animation .

The Big Flame Up (Year: 1949)
A firefighter turtle is shown, playing checkers with himself – using his shell as a board/having the board unfolded on its shell, and turning it alternately, so that once the head and hands come out of one side of the board, then on another.

A Haunting We Will Go (Year: 1949)
The turtle appears in one scene, walking slowly, but when ghost Casper greets him, he runs away in terror, at super speed.

The Case of the Cockeyed Canary (Year: 1952)
Little Audrey, investigating, asks the turtle for an alibi, he explains that he was watching TV, we can see the antenna coming out of his shell and how he is looking at the TV inside.

Winner by a Hare (Year: 1953)
The first of four animations featuring Tommy Tortoise and Moe Hare, another incarnation of the classic couple from The Tortoise and the Hare story. This time, unusually, we have two races in one animation! In the first, the turtle wins, he additionally made a bet and won a lot of money. The second race, which takes up most of the animation, is won by the hare – even though he makes every effort to ensure that the turtle wins, because this time he also bet on it. The punch line is the turtle receiving a huge win, because he bet on the hare in the second race. Perhaps obvious, the whole animation is full of turtle scenes.

The Oily Bird (Year: 1954)
Very small role, a turtle is shown going to sleep, putting an empty bottle out of his shell, probably for the milkman.

Rabbit Punch (Year: 1955)
Another duel between Tommy Tortoise and Moe Hare, this time boxing. Also this one ends with a turtle winning – thanks to the turtle breaking the fourth wall and using the script of the episode.

Sleuth But Sure (Year: 1956)
We meet Tommy Tortoise and Moe Hare again, this time the first one is a detective, chasing Moe, who is escaping from prison. By default, whatever the hare would do, the turtle is ultimately the top.

Mr. Money Gags (Year: 1957)
Last animation starring Tommy Tortoise and Moe Hare. This time the turtle comes to town, where Moe tries to trick him in various ways. Typically, the turtle is on top.

Turning the Fables (Year: 1960)
The turtle appears throughout the whole animation. His opponent is a hare, so this can be considered a reference to the story of the tortoise and the hare. The hare tries to trick the turtle and take the uranium sample he has found, in theory he even succeeds – but it turns out that the turtle was a part of a scam to encourage prospectors to spend money on rights to worthless pieces of land, so the turtle, in a way, win.

Turtle Scoop (Year: 1961)
Another variation about the story of The Tortoise and the Hare, but this time with differents characters than in the above four animations. They are both photographers working in the editorial office and tasked with taking a picture of the rocket taking off. As in the above stories, however, the pattern in which the turtle wins was retained, largely due to the fact that the actions taken by the hare to harm him, turns to the reptile’s advantage.

Short films – Warner Bros

In this text, we take a look at Warner Bros. shorts, the Merrie Melodies and Looney Tunes series.

Character of Cecil turtle, who appeared in two animations from the MM series and one LT, because of his iconicity, received his own note.

Merrie Melodies
Pagan Moon (Year: 1932)
In this animation, a turtle appears, on which one of the characters stands for a part of the way. The annoyed turtle, however, throws him off its back, takes off the shell and uses it as a boat to swim back.

Freddy the Freshman (Year: 1932)
This animation shows, i.a., an American football game in which the turtle also takes part. He falls unhappily on his back, unable to get up on his own, so he comes out of the shell, gets up and lifts it, putting it back on.

Pop Goes Your Heart (Year: 1934)
Turtles appear in two forms in this animation. The first are four turtles that jump from the log into the water and swim (they do not come out of the shells, but swim “on the backs”, using them as boats). The second is a turtle walking in the forest, which is being chased by a bear. He hides into the shell and leans out the other way round (i.e. the shell remained in place, but the turtle inside twisted and stuck his head out where he had his tail), bites the bear on the nose, chasing it away, and then turns back in the shell.

Shake Your Powder Puff (Year: 1934)
Turtle appears here as one of the musicians, he plays “on himself”, using his shell as a drum.

Flowers for Madame (Year: 1935)
Two turtles can be seen in the parade of various animals.

I Haven’t Got a Hat (Year: 1935)
The turtle is in one scene, playing on himself like on a drum.

Into Your Dance (Year: 1935)
The turtle appears in two scenes, first playing the cymbals, then the drum.

I Wanna Play House (Year: 1936)
There is a very similar scene as described above, with a turtle rotating in his shell because he is being accosted by a bear, the main difference is that it is a small bear, not an adult. Perhaps it can be counted as animation recycling, that occurs sometimes.

Boulevardier from the Bronx (Year: 1936)
Baseball game is shown, in which one of the players (the catcher) is a turtle. Probably for better protection, he twists his shell “back to front”.

Don’t Look Now (Year: 1936)
A pair of turtles is shown, male-turtle adores female-turtle, but she only shows interest in him after being hit by a cupid’s arrow – to the extent that she leaves her shell and joins him in his.

The Coo-Coo Nut Grove (Year: 1936)
The turtle is in two scenes, in one he dances, in the other he swims on his shell in the water.

The Woods Are Full Of Cuckoos (Year: 1937)
In one of the scenes the turtle is shown, she is unambiguously signed, as Deanna Terrapin.

The Lyin’ Mouse (Year: 1937)
Two turtles are shown sitting together, but when the mouse imitates a lion’s roar, she (judging by the fact that she has a flower on her hat) jumps into his shell and they escape together.

Daffy Duck And Egghead (Year: 1938)
A turtle appears in the role of a peacemaker, but also as a person proposing a duel to other characters. In the end, he gets shot in the shell.

The Good Egg (Year: 1939)
A 100% turtle-filled story about a hen that adopted a turtle egg, from which of course, the turtle hatched. He wanted to hang out with other chicks, but they weren’t interested, they even teased him and made fun of him. At the end, however, thanks to his different nature, he managed to save them when they were drowning, and then he was accepted as a normal colleague. You can also see the unusual structure of the turtle’s shell, when the chicken’s mother wants to put a diaper on him, she just tilts it up, when he is floating on the water, if he wants to, he can also stick his head out through the “window” in the middle of the back, like in some kind of the boat.

Sioux Me (Year: 1939)
Turtle is in one scene, he eats a lightning pill and gains super speed for a while.

The Little Lion Hunter (Year: 1939)
Turtle is in one scene, he slowly walk, but when he sees the hunter, he starts to walk much faster.

Aloha Hooey (Year: 1942)
In one of the scenes, a raven, trying to escape from a shark, hides inside a turtle’s shell. Owner does not like this, he explains it to the new tenant quite emphatically, and then, coming out of the shell himself, he kicks him out.

Dog Tired (Year: 1942)
The main element of this animation is the fight for the bone. At some point the turtle gets pulled in – as a result of confusion, the dog chasing the bone ends up “in the shell”, while the turtle itself falls out of it, with the bone in its mouth – and he starts to run away with that bone.

The Shell Shocked Egg (Year: 1948)
100% turtle animation. The beginning focuses on a turtle burying four of its eggs in the sand. One, however, partially hatches prematurely, i.e. only the lower/rear legs break through from the shell, on which the little turtle begins to move. Next, they show the adventures of the wanderer and the hatching of the remaining turtles and the turtle mother realizing that one is missing, so she starts digging where the egg should be, to find it. As a result of a combination of circumstances, the toddler is finally returned to the care of his mother, who, using a solar lamp, helps him to hatch. He, however, complains that although he already hatched, he is still in the shell.

Henhouse Henery (Year: 1949)
The turtle appears in one longer scene, the titular Henery attacks him and even climbs into his shell, from which the turtle throw him away.

Mouse-Taken Identity (Year: 1957)
Turtle appears here only in the form of a shell that the cat Sylwester wears while hunting a small kangaroo. In the background in the museum you can also see a skeleton that can be considered as an attempt to show the skeleton of a turtle.

Nelly’s Folly (Year: 1961)
Turtle appears in just one scene.

Looney Tunes
Bosko’s Woodland Daze (Year: 1932)
In this animation, a walking turtle appears.

Hollywood Capers (Year: 1935)
A turtle playing on the piano appears – how often happen in such animations, if necessary, he can contradict biology and, for example, leaving the other limbs in the right places, stick his head out of the shell in place where his tail should be.

Buddy in Africa (Year: 1935)
A turtle appears, playing on itself as if on some kind of instrument, he has strings on the front of the shell.

Alpine Antics (Year: 1936)
The turtle appears in two scenes here. First time as a skater who skates on ice, to his surprise, he notices that his reflection does not follow the rules of physics. In the second appearance, he shoots the pistol at the start of the race – as a result of the recoil, he falls from the tree on which he is standing (hiding into the shell during the flight down).

Porky in the North Woods (Year: 1936)
First, there is one turtle in the group scene, then a lot of turtles, playing on themselves like on the drums as they march. Also, riding on their shells in the snow, they attack the main negative character.

Porky’s Building (Year: 1937)
Turtles working on a construction site are shown, carrying cement in their shells.

Porky at the Crocadero (Year: 1938)
The turtle is shown twice, once among dancing couples, then playing on itself as an instrument, with strings attached to the front of his shell.

It’s an Ill Wind (Year: 1939)
The turtle appears in one scene, the dog accosts him, so the turtle defends himself.

Porky’s Baseball Broadcast (Year: 1940)
The turtle playing baseball reappears – as re-use of animations with the turtle made for the short Boulevardier from the Bronx from 1936. Likewise, he puts his shell back to front, etc., although here he has a tad fewer scenes, not all turtle elements have been reused.

Porky’s Poor Fish (Year: 1940)
At first, the turtle appears only in the form of a shadow/contour, seeing that someone has broke to the store, he rides the accompanying seahorse, later you can see him normally.

Who’s Who in the Zoo (Year: 1942)
One short scene shows a turtle and… a hair. Tortoise and the hair sounds like Tortoise and the Hare, a classic a story.

Wacky Blackout (Year: 1942)
Three hatching turtles are shown, two “regular” and one that believes to be a Jeep. His behavior and appearance closely coincide with what he thinks about himself.

The Ducktators (Year: 1942)
The animation was created as a parody of the situation in the world at that time, hence animal equivalents of such characters as Hitler and Mussolini appear there. The turtle element appears in a piece where the target of the satire is the Japanese general Hideki Tōjō – as a duck he places a sign on what appears to be a small island. The islet, however, turns out to be a turtle, dissatisfied with such treatment, so he chases the duck, beating him with a sign.

Robinson Crusoe Jr (Year: 1942)
There is a turtle, he dances and swaps outfits with another character (Friday).

Odor of the Day (Year: 1948)
The turtle appears in one scene, he is shown as “naked”, without a shell, he comes out of the water, some lake or river in which he used to bathe and puts on the shell he left on the shore – and get hit by a dog.

Curtain Razor (Year: 1949)
At the audition, there is, among others, a turtle speaking with a thousand votes – but when they have to be presented, he only manages to make only 999 votes, which is why he leaves sad.

Devil May Hare (Year: 1954)
Among the animals that run away from the arrival of the Tasmanian Devil, there is a turtle who gets into a brief conversation with Bugs (after he stops him, using a shovel in a very cartoonish way). Some people refer to this turtle as Cecil-like, sometimes even outright claiming that it is Cecil’s cameo.

Short films – Kung Fu Panda and other shorts related to cinema films

We do not want to artificially pump up the amount of notes, so we collectively describe here three animations from the Kung Fu Panda universe, followed by four different animations related to cinema films – meaning small films with characters whose main performance was a full-length, high-budget film.

Kung Fu Panda
Kung Fu Panda: Secrets of the Furious Five (Year: 2008)
Po (the title Panda) tells children five stories about the Furious Five. Oogway has a significant role in one of the stories, that about the Monkey.

Kung Fu Panda: Secrets of the Masters (Year: 2011)
Animation full of Oogway, showing him as a mentor who converted to the right path three martial masters, the Rhino, the Ox and the Crocodile.

Kung Fu Panda: Secrets of the Scroll (Year: 2015)
Animation about the origin of the Furious Five, filled with Oogway, he appears in many scenes, offering advice and knowledge.

Other shorts related to cinema films
Hammy’s Boomerang Adventure (Year: 2006)
A short movie set in the movie universe of Over The Hedge. Verne, a turtle, and one of the three main characters, appears in several scenes.

Dug’s Special Mission (Year: 2009)
A short animation happening in the universe of movie Up!, the title Dug sees a rock and say, thet it “looks like a turtle”.

Toy Story Toons: Small Fry (Year: 2011)
Animation set in the Toy Story universe, easiest to associate with the third movie, because there is only a year of difference between their release date. Here we get to know many unsuccessful, withdrawn toys added to sets with food for children. One of such unsuccessful toys is the Roxy Boxy turtle, the withdrawal of which was decided by a rather dangerous “fun feature”, his hands-boxing gloves fired with quite a lot of force. You can see him in a few scenes, moreover, the comedy element “Roxy accidentally knocks someone out with an accidental shot of the glove” is used twice.

Love At First Sight (Year: 2017)
A short animation from the universe of movie Sing. There were many different turtles in the movie, here also we can see them in some scenes, as members of the audience in the cinema, as viewers enjoying a dance in a music club (these turtles are dressed the same as the group of turtles auditioning in the main movie) or as happy couple walking together on the sidewalk.
