Dlaczego w bazie: W tej książce Greena żółwie, poza tytułem oczywiście, pojawiają się w czterech miejscach, dzięki tłumaczce, w pięciu.
Pierwsza wzmianka to kawałek o żółwiu na rzecze:
Siedzący na częściowo zanurzonym drzewie w pobliżu brzegu żółwiak zauważył nas i z pluskiem zsunął się do wody. W tej rzece mieszkał pewnie legion żółwi.1
Druga wzmianka dotyczy oglądania żółwi ninja.
Leżałem z mamą w łóżku i oglądaliśmy Wojownicze żółwie ninja na telewizorze w jej sali. Miała otwarte oczy i oddychała samodzielnie, a ja leżałem obok niej i oglądałem te żółwie.2
Trzecia wzmianka jest wzmianką jedynie dzięki tłumaczeniu:
Wciąż posuwałyśmy się przez parking w żółwim tempie.3
Kolejna wzmianka to przytoczenie znanej anegdoty o „żółwiach aż do końca„, do której nawiązuje tytuł (a której inna wersja wystąpiła np. w Folklorze Świata Dysku)
Jakiś naukowiec miał wykład o historii Ziemi przed wielką publicznością. Wyjaśniał, że Ziemia powstała miliardy lat temu z chmury kosmicznego pyłu i że przez jakiś czas była bardzo gorąca, ale potem ostygła na tyle, że mogły powstać oceany.
W oceanach pojawiło się życie, najpierw jednokomórkowe, z czasem bardziej złożone i zróżnicowane, aż wreszcie, jakieś dwieście pięćdziesiąt tysięcy lat temu, wyewoluował człowiek, który z czasem zaczął produkować coraz to lepsze narzędzia, aż w końcu doszedł do statków kosmicznych i tak dalej. Opowiadał to wszystko – kontynuowała – a na końcu spytał, czy ktoś chciałby coś powiedzieć. Wtedy jakaś staruszka siedząca na końcu sali podniosła rękę i stwierdziła: „Wszystko pięknie, panie naukowcu, ale prawda jest taka, że Ziemia to płaski talerz spoczywający na grzbiecie ogromnego żółwia”. Naukowiec chciał się trochę zabawić, więc zapytał: „No dobrze, ale na czym w takim razie spoczywa żółw?”.
A staruszka na to: „Na grzbiecie drugiego żółwia”. Naukowiec, już trochę zniecierpliwiony: „A tamten żółw?”. A staruszka: „Nic pan nie rozumie. Pod nim jest kolejny żółw i tak aż do końca”.
Roześmiałam się.
– I tak aż do końca.
– Żółwie aż do cholernego końca, Holmesy. Próbujesz znaleźć tego, który jest na samym dole, ale to nie tak działa.
– Żółwie aż do końca – powtórzyłam, czując coś w rodzaju duchowego olśnienia.4
Ostatnia wzmianka to nawiązanie do wypisanej wyżej anegdoty:
Gdy Daisy zmieniła piosenkę na romantyczną balladę i śpiewała ją razem z Mychalem, zaczęłam myśleć o żółwiach sięgających aż do końca.5
1. On a half-submerged tree near the river’s bank, a softshell turtle noticed us and plopped into the water. The river was lousy with turtles.
2. I would lie in bed with her and we would watch Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles on the TV in her room. Her eyes were open and everything, and she could breathe by herself, and I would lie there next to her and watch TMNT.
3. We were still inching our way through the student parking lot.
4. ”Okay, so there’s this scientist, and he’s giving a lecture to a huge audience about the history of the earth, and he explains that the earth was formed billions of years ago from a cloud of cosmic dust, and then for a while the earth was very hot, but then it cooled enough for oceans to form. And single-celled life emerged in the oceans, and then over billions of years, life got more abundant and complex, until two hundred fifty thousand or so years ago, humans evolved, and we started using more advanced tools, and then eventually built spaceships and everything.
So he gives this whole presentation about the history of earth and life on it, and then at the end, he asks if there are any questions. An old woman in the back raises her hand, and says, ”That’s all fine and good, Mr. Scientist, but the truth is, the earth is a flat plane resting on the back of a giant turtle.’
”The scientist decides to have a bit of fun with the woman and responds, ”Well, but if that’s so, what is the giant turtle standing upon?’
”And the woman says, ”It is standing upon the shell of another giant turtle.’
”And now the scientist is frustrated, and he says, ”Well, then what is that turtle standing upon?’
”And the old woman says, ”Sir, you don’t understand. It’s turtles all the way down.”’
I laughed. ”It’s turtles all the way down.”
”It’s turtles all the way fucking down, Holmesy. You’re trying to find the turtle at the bottom of the pile, but that’s not how it works.”
”Because it’s turtles all the way down,” I said again, feeling something akin to a spiritual revelation.
5. As Daisy switched the song to a romantic ballad that she and Mychal were singing, I started thinking about turtles all the way down.
