Pokemon

Pokemon are quite known, but not everyone knows that they start with the GameBoy game – along with popularity of games, Pokemon conquered virtually all other territories, anime, popular collector’s card game, manga, and many different toys and related collectibles (and of course, many other games).

Pokemon are usually divided into “generations”, in which every few years a new group of pokemon appear, with a new region and similar things. Below we show turtle-Pokemon, divided into generations (the name of the introduced region is in brackets).
As part of the first generation (Kanto), among 151 pokemon, three turtles appeared, Squirtle and his two evolutions, Wartortle and Blastoise. This Pokemon was a water starter (one of the three pokemon that the player could choose at the very beginning of the game).

As part of the second (Johto) generation, 100 new creatures have been added, but without any turtle.

The third generation (Hoenn) brought 135 new Pokémon, including one turtle, Torkoal (fire type).

The fourth generation (Sinnoh) is 107 new pokemons and three turtles! Again, the starter was a turtle, Turtwig (grass type), and two of his evolutions, Grotle and Torterra.

The fifth generation (Unova) brought as many as 156 new pokemons, including two turtles, the most similar to the turtles known from our world, i.e. Tirtouga and Carracosta.

The sixth generation (Kalos) is only 72 new creatures, and theoretically there is no new turtle, however, this generation introduced the “Mega Evolution” mechanic – selected pokemon, after meeting certain circumstances, can temporarily change into an even higher, mega form. One of the turtle pokemons, Blastoise, got the option to do this.

The seventh generation (Alola) has 88 new creatures, including one turtle, Turtonator.

The eighth generation (Galar) features 89 new creatures, including two turtles, Chewtle and Drednaw. Additionally, a new mechanic known as Gigantamax was introduced with this region. Such enormous forms were given to the debuting Drednaw and Blastoise, who came from the first generation.

In total, out of 898 different pokemons, 12 are turtles (without counting mega and gigantamax versions as separate pokemons).

In Anime, there were quite a few episodes with turtle-Pokemon, some very turtle-centric and many where they played only a minor or even marginal role. The turtles that have appeared in many episodes are:
Squirtle trained by Ash (main character)
Squirtle Squad, group of Squirtle/Wartortle/Blastoise-firefighters and special episode – a separate note with the most turtle episodes, including a few with the squirtle squad, led by the mentioned above Ash’s Squirtle
Squirtle trained by May (he evolved into Wartortle)
Squirtle trained by Tierro (he evolved into Blastoise)
Torkoal trained by Asha
Turtwig trained by Ash (he evolved into Torterra)
Torterra trained by Paul (appears in final form already, only in flashbacks you can see basic form, Turtwig)
Turtonator trained by Kiawe

In addition, we have collective articles describing:
Various Squirtle
Various Wartortle
Various Blastoise
Various Torkoal
Various Turtwi, Grotle and Torterra
Various Tirtouga and Carracosta
Also worth noting is a character named Laki, who dresses very “Turtonator-like”.

Above were described official Pokemon things. Below is a list of other things in which there are references to Turtle Pokemon.

We found such a reference in five films:
100 Greatest Toys – Pokemon have been selected as one of the title hundred best toys. Among many miscellaneous things, a game in which you can see Squirte is shown.
Evolution – One of the children visible at one point is wearing a T-shirt with Squirtle.
Player One – The reference is not unequivocal, because a turtle with cannons on his back appears, he is very Blastoise-like.
Not for resale – Squirtle figure and Pokemon Blue game (with Blastoise) are visible.
The Bits of Yesterday – Squirtle is visible on cover/box of something.

We found Pokemon elements in two series:
Malcolm in the Middle– Plush Squirtle appears in several episodes.
30 Rock – Squirtle is mentioned in one episode.
Anime: Drawing a Revolution – One scene is showed.

In the comic series Ms. Marvel there is a reference to Squirtle. Poke-turtle references can also be found in as many as six comicstrips that we described in TD – Rob Rogers, XKCD, Ripley’s Believe It or Not, Thetababy, Off the Mark i Brevity.

The last worth mentioning thing is the Squirtle described in the list of sculptures, found at Suzano in Brazil.
