Achilles and the tortoise

One of the paradoxes of Zeno of Elea uses the turtle as an example, instead of describing it in our own words, we will quote Wikipedia: In the paradox of Achilles and the tortoise, Achilles is in a footrace with the tortoise. Achilles allows the tortoise a head start of 100 meters, for example. Suppose that each racer starts running at some constant speed, one faster than the other. After some finite time, Achilles will have run 100 meters, bringing him to the tortoise’s starting point. During this time, the tortoise has run a much shorter distance, say 2 meters. It will then take Achilles some further time to run that distance, by which time the tortoise will have advanced farther; and then more time still to reach this third point, while the tortoise moves ahead. Thus, whenever Achilles arrives somewhere the tortoise has been, he still has some distance to go before he can even reach the tortoise. As Aristotle noted, this argument is similar to the Dichotomy.[13] It lacks, however, the apparent conclusion of motionlessness.

We refer to this paradox in 4 book notes.
The first case is referenced in The God Delusion. The next two references are in Terry Pratchett’s books, first Pyramids parody this concept, then The Science of Discworld III – Darwin’s Watch mentions it (and the events of the Pyramids). This is also mentioned in one question in The Unseen University Challenge.

Kappa

Kappa is a creature derived from Japanese folklore, a demon who is often described as having turtle features – mostly very turtle-like shell.

We have quite a few notes in TD where Kappa is mentioned.

In movies, we have Death Kappa all about Kappa, and Making Fun: The Story of Funko featuring a Funko POP figure depicting Kappa. This demon can also be seen in the 1939 short, Oyoge ya Oyoge.

Kappa related elements are in two anime series that we have in TD: in Ai-Mai-Mi Kappa appears, while in Shirokuma Cafe (Polar Bear’s Cafe) there are only mentions of her.

In the sculpture notes we have described two cities that have sculptures of Kappa – in the Japanese city of Toyohashi there are as many as four sculptures (in different places), and in the American city of Kansas City is another sculpture depicting Kappa.

We have a separate paragraph for the appearances of kappa in the Harry Potter universe – it was mentioned in two books, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (although it does not appear in the film adaptations of these books). In movies, in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them it is only in the form of a recollection in the newspaper’s headline, in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald Kappa apears “in person”. In the HP documentary, Harry Potter: A History of Magic Kappa can be seen in one of the pictures in the book that is being shown at one point.

In our music database, we have two songs with some references to Kappa:

In the section Short films – Live action we have one position (“Gacha Gacha”) where you can see a figure of Kappa.

Touche Turtle

Touche Turtle is one of the two main characters in the animated series Touche Turtle and Dum Dum.

In addition to the series, he has appeared extensively in the related comic books and played a minor role in the film Yogi’s Ark Lark.

He is also mentioned in the note about Making Fun: The Story of Funko movie, where the toy figure is shown, and in A Yabba-Dabba-Doo Celebration!: 50 Years of Hanna-Barbera where he appears in two scenes.

Yertle the Turtle

Yertle the Turtle is the protagonist of the book Yertle the Turtle and Other Stories, which we do not have described in the database – yet.

This character is mentioned in one comic book note, we also have a description of the sculpture depicting this character, in Springfield, Massachusetts, USA.

The book itself appears in the movie Zodiac, in the series The Simpsons not only appears but is also mentioned in the dialogue, and in the series Friends and Sabrina, the Teenage Witch it is only mentioned in the dialogue.

In the Fargo series, the name of the book is not mentioned, but its plot is basically described.

In our music database, we have two songs with some references to Yertle:

Testudo

The official mascot of the University of Maryland. It is a Diamondback terrapin and is essentially ubiquitous in the symbolism associated with this college, its campus, sports teams, and so on.

In the Trivia – Symbols – Sport section we have already described this fact, we also have an interesting fact linking the university with Gamera.

In the sculpture section, we have two pieces about Testudo-related sculptures – under the number 001 we have a description of several sculptures of this turtle on campus. A bit below (we do not duplicate the link) we also show 50 different versions-painting that various artists have prepared as part of a project related to the 150th anniversary of the university.

In one of the films featured in the TD, The 5th Quarter the American football team from Maryland appears, adequately named and with the correct symbolism.

Turtles all the way down

The cosmological hypothesis, that the earth rests on an infinite pile of turtles, we quote heree version from “A Brief History of Time”: A well-known scientist (some say it was Bertrand Russell) once gave a public lecture on astronomy. He described how the earth orbits around the sun and how the sun, in turn, orbits around the center of a vast collection of stars called our galaxy. At the end of the lecture, a little old lady at the back of the room got up and said: “What you have told us is rubbish. The world is really a flat plate supported on the back of a giant tortoise.” The scientist gave a superior smile before replying, “What is the tortoise standing on.” “You’re very clever, young man, very clever,” said the old lady. “But it’s turtles all the way down!”

This story is obviously quoted in the A Brief History of Time: From the Big Bang to Black Holes from which we took the above quote. The book The Science of Discworld IV – Judgement Day recalls this anecdote and mentions the “Bief History of Time”. Also in the book The Dark Tower VI: Song of Susannah this history is mentioned.

The book Turtles All the Way Down not only recalls the story, but the title itself is a reference!

In addition to the aforementioned Science of Discworld IV, this theme appears in 3 other books related to this universe: The Science of Discworld refers to this “phenomenon”, in The Folklore of Discworld a variation on this story is referenced, while in The Discworld Companion, The Discworld Companion Updated and Turtle Recall, after the encyclopedic part, it is used as the name of one chapter.

Lonesome George

Considered the last of the Chelonoidis abingdonii giant tortoises (also known as the “Pinta giant tortoise”), which has gained him some popularity and media recognition.

We have mentions about him in fivenotes. The first is the No Man’s Valley animation from 1981, where George is one of the characters.

The second case is the Galapagos 3D nature series aired in 2013 – probably the last work where you can watch George, as he passed away on June 24, 2012, two weeks after the filming of scenes with David Attenborough (who hosts the series) visiting him.

The last three are in the books, this turtle is mentioned in What Do Animals Think And Feel?, in Galapagos: The Islands That Changed the World and in Galapagos: Preserving Darwin’s legacy.
