Why in Database: Comics about Asterix, as most people probably know, revolve around the title character, his friend, Obelix and their opponents, most often Roman legions. And since we have the Roman legions, there is also a military formation known as the tortoise, testudo. Below is an overview of published comics about Asterix, we writes of course only about issues with turtle elements.
Asterix and Cleopatra: The turtle appears in this comic as a military formation used by Roman legionnaires on one shot. Two frames later, when it is smashed by Obelix throwing huge stone blocks, there is also a verbal joke, because in the first frame it says that the attack is led by a formation known as the tortose, while retreat is a military maneuver known as the hare (see: Tortoise and the hare).
Asterix and the Normans: The turtle is shown among various forest animals that escapes as a result of the singing of the bard Assurancetourix.
Asterix The Legionary: In this comic, an order is given to form a tortoise, a military formation. This time, however, we do not see it “as it should be”, different (and opposed to each other) Roman legions mix with each other and chaos arises, not a proper formation.
Asterix in Switzerland: In this comic book, one of the characters, a quaestor, is poisoned and various doctors are called to diagnose and look for a cure. One of doctors mentions, that ivy must be mixed with the blood of a pigeon and a turtle.
Asterix and the Soothsayer: The turtle only appears in one frame, along with other forest animals, he is escaping from the terrible stench.
Asterix and the Secret Weapon: Again, in this comic book, the turtle, along with other forest animals and legionnaires, is shown in one frame during escape.
