The giant Pinta Island tortoise of the species Chelonoidis abingdonii was wont to greet its keeper at the Charles Darwin Research Station on the island of Santa Cruz in the Galápagos in a very similar manner. The last surviving individual of this subspecies, which the BBC dubbed ‘Lonesome George’, describing it as the loneliest animal on the planet, died in 2012 at the age of just over 100 and weighing some 90 kilos (200 pounds). Giant Galápagos tortoises grow throughout their lives and can reach weights of over 400 kilograms (880 pounds). It is a great pity that we have been deprived of this species for ever, simply because it tasted so good.
