Turtles in comics: Don Rosa

In this note, we look at turtle elements that appear in comics that Don Rosa created – and he created as part of the “universe of ducks”, Scrooge McKwacz, Donald Duck, his Nephews etc. From all his work, turtle elements appear in four comics.

The Master of the Mississippi: Turtles only in the verbal layer, Snapping Turtles are mentioned in the form of an epithet.

The Dutchman’s Secret: The turtle appears primarily in the form of a drawing (carved in the rock, later also redrawn on a piece of paper) and in words, one of Donald’s nephews explains that the turtle’s sign often meant danger/threat.

The Lost Charts of Columbus: The turtle appears only in one frame, it lies on a shelf in the room where the phone is answered by a boy from the hotel staff. As a curiosity, this frame is presented in three different color versions – because Don Rosa’s comics have received several different “colorings”.

The Treasure Of The Ten Avatars: The comic draws a lot from Hindu mythology, including ten Vishnu avatars. In the form of a symbol on a panel with ten buttons (each corresponding to one of the avatars), the turtle scrolls through many scenes, the Kurma himself (turtle avatar) is also mentioned in one dialogue.
