Short films – Toby

Toby Tortosie is a character that exists in the Disney universe (i.a. as part of the Silly Symphony series, other short films of which are described in this note) a version of the turtle from the classic story about the Tortoise and the Hare . A note about him, along with links to other places where he appeared can be found here, and below is detailed description of three animated short films in which he appeared:

The Tortoise and the Hare (Year: 1935)
Part of the Silly Symphony series and the debut of both main characters, Toby Tortoise and Max Hare. The plot is standard, the characters race, the turtle at its steady pace, while the overconfident hare wastes time for a nap, showing off in front of the hare ladies, etc., and of course he loses.

Toby Tortoise Returns (Year: 1936)
Another Silly Symphony cartoon, Max Hare wants and gets a rematch, this time in the form of a boxing match. As is usual in such stories, he loses at the end – mostly by his attempts to cheat (ultimately, by pouring fireworks into Toby’s shell, etc., making him an uncontrolled missile that knocked out Max).

The Standard Parade (Year: 1939)
Toby makes a brief appearance in this promotional animation, in one scene he crosses the screen carrying (like everyone else) the banner ad.
