Life on Earth

Title: Life on Earth
Year: 1979
Narration David Attenborough
Genre: Documentary
Country: UK
Viewing method: Whole series

Why in Database: A thirteen-episode nature series narrated by David Attenborough. The turtle elements only appear in two episodes, but mostly in episode seven, “Victors of the Dry Land” where there is a really big chunk about the largest of the tortoises. Besides that, in the last episode, the thirteenth, “The Compulsive Communicators” there are two or three short pieces about turtles – first something turtle-like is visible when aboriginal drawings are shown, then a short scene with a tramping turtle, and finally when the printing press and the newspaper composition process are briefly shown, it can be seen that an element of the shown page will be a photo with turtles.

Terra Mater

Title: Terra Mater
Year: 2011-ongoing
Genre: Documentary
Country: Austria
Viewing method: Selected episodes

Why in Database: A multi-episode Austrian Documentary series, in which we only describe episodes 18 and 19 of the sixth series, that is “Galapagos – Die Macht des Meeres” (Galapagos – In the Grip of the Ocean) and “Galapagos – Gefangen im Paradies” (Galapagos – Trapped in Paradise), which as titles points out, are about the Galapagos, so there are many turtle scenes in both episodes. Within the series itself, there are certainly more episodes to which you should pay attention from a turtle’s point of view, and we will definitely come back to this topic.

Animal Crime Scene

Title: Animal Crime Scene
Year: 2005
Narration: David Attenborough
Genre: Documentary
Country: UK
Viewing method: Whole series

Why in Database: A five-episode series in the atmosphere known to people watching series from the CSI family – there is a body (of an animal) and the causes of its death are examined to determine the most likely scenario. The educational value of the program results from showing how different threats await specific animals, for some people the fact that dead animals can be seen may be a downside. The second episode, “Ocean Assassin“, is entirely devoted to the case of a dead sea turtle found on the beach – so of course a huge number of turtle scenes appear.
